Budgee is the project of Canadian born, Glasgow based, songwriter Celine Brooks.
The first half of tonight’s Shindig will be by budgee, followed by a solo performance by Gareth Dickson.
Taking influence from a range of styles from modern folk and Americana to classic pop, Budgee is familiar yet contemporary with an observational lyrical style.
The current incarnation of Budgee is a two-piece featuring Scottish musician Gareth Dickson (solo artist and guitarist in Vashti Bunyan’s touring setup over the last 10 years). The blend makes for a quiet yet funky collaboration, with threads of both melancholy and irreverence. Their debut album was released on the French label Discolexique in 2019, and with a new one on the way Budgee look set to be, at the very least, staying aloft a little longer
Based around the acoustic guitar, Gareth Dickson’s songs employ analogue delay and reverb in an attempt to recreate something of the modern ambient/electro as well as referencing some of the well known fingerpickers of the past. Sometimes entirely instrumental, sometimes with sparing vocals, always with the idea of exploring and finding new possibilities for an age old instrument. Melodically deriving some of their substance from a deep and long standing love of classical music
