Rupert was ‘born’ in 1920, the creation of Mary Tourtel. Since then, he has grown into a much-loved companion to generations of children, and this is his story. This lecture will focus mainly on Alfred Bestall, the artist who took over Tourtel’s legacy and developed the enchanted world of Rupert; and on the special qualities he imparted to these tales of an England filled with magical possibilities.
