Overview

A mesmerising journey with the wolf and wildness, through story, song and shadow
Created and Performed by Dougie Mackay and Jemima Thewes

Ancient myth, mesmeric imagery and dreamlike soundscapes open a liminal space where Norse gods, Irish shapeshifters and Siberian wolf-children traverse moors and mountains.
Live music stirs the soul. Shadow puppetry and animation conjure terror and tenderness in this creative ode to the wolf and wildness- drawing on folk arts while engaging a modern audience hungry for stories of landscape, ecology and the more-than-human world.
Once respected and woven into the cosmology of ancient cultures, wolves became villains in European fairy tales and were hunted to extinction in Scotland by the 18th century. This show asks: ‘in the absence of the wolf, what is lost?’
Originally commissioned by the Scottish International Storytelling Festival 2024, ‘A Wolf Shall Devour the Sun’ received 5★ reviews, sell-out shows and an extended run during 2025 Edinburgh Fringe.
“A beautiful show of so many parts… The erudite storytelling of Douglas Mackay finds an empathetic partner in Jemima Thewes’s liminal visual and aural accompaniment. I absolutely loved it.” -Jane-Ann Purdy, Tradfest & Soundhouse co-founder
