Celebrating Women in History: A Creative Workshop for Everyone (16+)
Friday 17th October 2025
Part of the Stirling Science Festival 2025.
Overview
A history talk followed by a walk in the graveyard.
This workshop combines creative methods with “mini lectures” on four historical women:
- Lady Annas Keith, Countess of Moray and Argyll
- Lady Finola MacDonald, politician and queen consort of Tyrconnell;
- Ann Radcliffe, author and pioneer of Gothic literature;
- Mary Seacole, a doctress, nurse, and entrepreneur.
The workshop will discuss the lives and achievements of four influential women between 1562 and 1881 broadly, we will be drawing special attention to their health and well-being and shed light on some of the personal difficulties they grappled with. Some of the topics touched on in this context are childbirth and -loss, mental health, and (chronic) illness for women in the past.
The workshop will be open to participants of all genders, age groups, and backgrounds who want to learn more about inspiring women in history and celebrate their legacy with us.
It will then be followed by a creative workshop that encourages attendees to create poetry, art or long-form writing in celebration of all the women that inspire and empower them.
The workshop will end with an optional walk up to the Stirling graveyard, where participants will be invited to join us for a visit to the graves of some of the women who shaped Stirling over the last 900 years.
4.30pm to 6pm at Tolbooth. Free to join.
